The Meter’s Ticking.Translated by Akbar Muhammad.

He said to us, “She’s veritably mine!”
“It’s but a joke, friend, it’s but a joke!
Do come away — thou’rt utterly in wine.
It’s not thy business, boy, don’t walk this road!”

But he just cried, “I’ve really won today!
Let’s catch a cab, why not go on a roam?
The meter’s ticking, but it’s all the same,
We’ll have to pay but when the roam’s over.”
“The meter’s ticking, but it’s all the same,
We’ll have to pay but when the roam’s over.”

I have no trouble about queer birds,
Yet tried to hold him, though I wasn’t sober.
But he just talked and talked about her...
“Don’t even look at her, from now onward!”

My blood has started boiling in my veins,
And with a smile like I had heretofore,
I softly said to him, “It’s all the same,
But thou shalt pay, friend, when the roam’s over!”
I softly said to him, “It’s all the same,
But thou shalt pay, friend, when the roam’s over!”

As words as tears leave me cold tonight —
I want to fight, and I’ve been really strengthened!
It’s not the moment to discuss my right —
Thou hast to pay for her, and thou shalt pay, friend!..

Life’s rushing on, and I enjoy each day.
I’m feeling good, I want to laugh and joke.
The meter’s ticking, but it’s all the same,
We’ll have to pay but when the roam’s over...
The meter’s ticking, but it’s all the same,
We’ll have to pay but when the roam’s over...
